Since “Paradise State Of Mind” is two months away I thought I'd pop in and take stock of all the album artwork thus far. From “Torches” to “Supermodel” and “Sacred Hearts Club”, Foster The People are very aesthetically conscious about how their albums are presented. I admire their creativity and knowing what's good. So, with that said, let's analyze these album covers.
Let's begin with the band's 2011 debut “Torches”. The album cover is an illustration of some penciled cartoons holding a torch. In the 2021 gig at The Wiltern the boys used these as inflatables to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the album. The overall aesthetic isn't much of anything, but it gets the job done with a booklet full of lyrics and an orange toned disc lights a fire.
My opinion of “Supermodel” may be a bit controversial, but I really don't agree with the image of a cartoon character throwing up. I understand the significance of why FTP used it on the cover of the album, but I just find it disgusting. However, I do appreciate the blue tones and the booklet having more to take in with the different drawings as well as lyrics in italics. It's a good cover art for an album like “Supermodel” that deals with a heavy subject matter.
Next is the cover art for “Sacred Hearts Club”, and I actually really like seeing the band's faces on their album for once. The red tones aren't just warm and inviting, but also suggest a fun adventure of dancing and other hijinks inside the "SHC" dance hall. This is my most favorite album and cover art the band has done so far.
Last but not least, we have the band's fourth album “Paradise State Of Mind” out later this summer. When I first saw the cover art I was a bit dumbfounded since it didn't look like anything the band has done before. Looking at it again, it does sort of resemble a more mind-bending variation of “Torches” and “Supermodel”, but with a sophisticated twist. It's exciting Foster The People are doing something totally unique this time around but still keeping it familiar for the diehards.
If I had to choose a winner, I'd say it's a tie between "Sacred Hearts Club" and "Paradise State Of Mind". I'm not being bias, it was a hard choice to pick one. Although, I am partial to SHC than to the others, but they're all beautiful and artistically crafted to perfection.
