A big part of recording artists releasing new music is the video to accompany new singles. I personally don't care about music videos. I don't think about videos, and the only reason I even watch them is to get the most out of a band's new era. Likewise, the video for “Lost In Space” debuted May 31, 2024 directed by Rupert Holler. But today's article has nothing to do with him, instead, it's about Mark Foster directing videos for Foster The People. Let's get it!
Foster The People dropped “Supermodel” on March 14, 2014 featuring the singles “Coming Of Age”, “Best Friend”, and “Pseudologia Fantastica”. The latter being the first video Mark Foster directed for the group, among many others. It's actually interesting to me how he's so hands on with anything to do with FTP, and he deserves respect for his hard work. Although he didn't work on the video for “Houdini”, I'd say that's my favorite video Foster The People have ever released.
Other videos Foster has created for the band are “Pick U Up”, “Imagination”, and “Worst Nites”. Of the four Mark has created, my favorite one is definitely “Worst Nites”, not just because I think clowns are cool, but also because it has a good message of individuality. One other reason why this is my favorite video is the popping color scheme, right down to the clown's wardrobe. The clown is played by none other than Ritchie The Barber.
The choreography and ambiance in the video for “Pick U Up” is well-put together and reflects Mark Foster's artistry as a creative visionary. Watching this video makes me want to throw on a party dress and hit up a club or two after midnight. The dancing and shots of the city are aesthetically pleasing, and just a fun atmosphere overall.
Getting back to discussing the video for “Pseudologia Fantastica”, it's classic Foster The People with the animation echoing the cartoony album cover and a weird story to go with it. The video features the illustrations found in the album's booklet. I have both the “Supermodel” CD and vinyl I purchased on Amazon, and I just adore it. The abstract and psychedelic elements make for one trippy experience.
The video for “Imagination” is also trademark Foster The People with the vintage 70s reel playing right into FTP's whole retro aesthetic. I notice these boys have such a love of older decades and the media those times produced really influenced their current work. Even “Paradise State Of Mind” started as a case study of the 70s and everything concerning the decade, including the political climate repeating itself in the 2020s.
I'm not so much a fan of anything before 1980, but I can appreciate everything FTP does. The fun part is I get to live vicariously through anything these boys produce and that's what makes me the happiest.
That's it. That's all I have for you today. Have a good one!
