Since it's been a slow news week, I thought I'd share another post about Foster The People. This time, however, I'd like to discuss the minimalistic pleasure of “Torches”. What I mean by that is the album, to an outsider, may seem rather lackluster or even that the songs all sound similar, but, this couldn't be further from the truth. Come with me to the land of milk and honey as we deep dive into this fantastic record.
When I first heard “Torches” in mid-May of 2022, I wasn't fully aware of what I'd be in for. In my ignorance I'd assume it'd be an album made up of only “Pumped Up Kicks” as that'd been the first song I ever heard from them. After spending one afternoon going track by track, I realized I was dead wrong. The song that stood out the most was “Waste”, which, when I look back, really changed my life, and I'll never forget that experience. This is just one of the many great things about this amazing debut, but in my opinion, it only gets better.
“Torches” is the landmark debut from Foster The People released on May 23, 2011. The band broke barriers with controversial hit “Pumped Up Kicks” and music has never been the same. Although there are many reasons as to why this colossal album is top-tier on God's CD rack, I'd like to share some of my own thoughts. The ethereal ambiance on “Warrant”, “Miss You”, and bonus track, “Broken Jaw”, sound like the angels are welcoming you into heaven. “Don't Stop” sees the boys dabbling into Alternative rock alongside “I Would Do Anything For You” following in its footsteps.
Everything on this record is top class and expertly crafted to sound as though the universe personally delivered it to you by way of a good pair of earbuds. As Foster The People continue to progress and evolve into bonafide rockers with even more albums in the works, “Torches” still holds a special place in my heart for opening the door to FTP's kaleidoscopic world. What lies beyond is anyone's guess.
