It always warms my heart when artists revisit old childhood favorites to make their own. Today we're discussing Julia Garner starring in “Apartment 7A”, a prequel to classic horror gem “Rosemary's Baby”. It's that time of year when the spooky comes out to play and the foliage turns bright colors, thus it must be Halloween! I know you're excited to see more horror on TV and in cinemas, so let's just dive right into it.
I remember I was allowed to watch “Rosemary's Baby” on movie night when I was just barely six years old back in the mid-90s. My extended family used to come over to our house to watch movies on weekends or any time we were all off from work or school. I also remember when everybody got so scared they immediately ejected the video from the VCR to never watch again. The last time I saw this movie was probably the mid-2010s when I still lived with my ex-boyfriend, and I definitely found it boring, but quite instrumental in molding my love of horror well into adulthood.
Premiering on Paramount Plus on September 27th, 2024, Garner steps into character as female lead Terry Gionoffrio “an aspiring dancer in New York City who suffers an injury and moves into a luxury apartment building in 1965 called the Bramford with an affluent couple (Wiest and McNally). After a Broadway producer (Sturgess) offers her a path to fame, Terry has an evening she can’t quite remember and suspects that something evil inhabits her apartment and the building itself. An official synopsis reading: ‘However, after an evening she can’t fully remember, disturbing circumstances soon have her second-guessing the sacrifices she’s willing to make for her career as she realizes that something evil is living not only in Apartment 7A, but in the Bramford itself.’”
Aside from Garner, other actors in the film include: Dianne Wiest, Kevin McNally, Jim Sturgess, Marli Siu, Andrew Buchan, Rosy McEwen, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith. “The film was inspired by Ira Levin’s Rosemary’s Baby and offers viewers a glimpse of Bramford prior to Rosemary’s arrival.”
The synopsis sounds really good, however, I've already seen some headlines about the lack of scares and the likelihood of yet another Hollywood flop. I've been so out of the horror game nothing really scares me anymore. The last time I went to the movies was August 2nd of this year to watch “Trap” directed by M. Knight Shyamalan, which was actually fantastic. I hope the movie does well so Mrs. Julia can enjoy a bit of that sweet pie.
